Paloma Contreras Lomas

Bio

Paloma Contreras Lomas’ work actively moves across the territories of writing, video, drawing, and performance, alongside collective production that runs parallel to her personal research. Her practice addresses a range of problematics such as class displacement, literary fiction as a tool, landscape as context, costume, and witness, Latin American science fiction, and the terrors of the middle class.

Throughout her career, Contreras Lomas has created, populated, and expanded a “pantheon” of characters that, whether representing paradigmatic or specific entities, originate from sources as varied as major geopolitical events and pop culture. This cast of characters first unfolds through texts that intertwine fantasy with autobiography, and later manifests in formats that contend with their own monumentality, heightened vigor, and baroque narrative.

Lives and works in Mexico City

Paloma Contreras Lomas (Mexico City, 1991) began her artistic training in the Visual Arts program at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado “La Esmeralda” (2011–2015). Shortly thereafter she joined the multidisciplinary collective Biquini Wax EPS (2015–2022), and that same year entered the SOMA educational program (2016–2018).

Her work has been exhibited at Museo Tamayo, Museo de Arte de Zapopan, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey, and Museo Anahuacalli in Mexico, as well as at the Center for Art, Research and Alliances (CARA) in New York, the Seattle Art Museum, and Desert X in Palm Springs, among others internationally. Her work is included in the collections of Museo Tamayo, Seattle Art Museum, CIFO, the Estrellita B. Brodsky Collection, Kadist, Fundación M, and Yuyito.
