Booth P38
Our booth includes new works conceived specially for the fair by Guadalajara born artists Javier Barrios (Gualdalajara, 1989) and Renata Petersen (Guadalajara, 1993). In a powerful dialogue between skillfully produced pieces, Barrios and Petersen will intertwine their recent investigations through their common interest in drawing as a story telling medium, and the exploration of human collectivity and desire.
The booth is comprised by a set of 3 new oil paintings by Barrios, in which flowers (more specifically orchids) enact allegorical scenes in which flora acquires anthropomorphic features, and therefore, features complex historical, social and psychological traits.
It also features a set of large ceramic vases by Petersen that serve as canvases to construct interconnected narratives about various new religiosities that emerged all through Latin America and the USA.
Barrios’ work, through highly sophisticated and technically masterful drawings and paintings, subtly opens a conversation on the very idea of migration and exoticism by speaking about the historical displacement of endemic flora through colonization and the impact that it has had in global culture.
On the other hand, Petersen’s hand-crafted ceramic vases employ a traditional artisanal technique originated in Tlaquepaque, Jalisco, as a powerful and iconic vehicle (clearly identifiable as a Mexican product) to discuss the artist’s ongoing investigation about the expansion of religious sects in a contemporary world full of doubt and spiritual necessity, with an implicit vision of the female role within these systems of power. The artist’s presentation will also include a blown-glass phallic city sculpture.
