Toma su título de un texto que Abraham Cruz Villegas escribió en 1997 y se plantea a partir de una elipsis temporal entre ese ensayo y la escultura nueva ‘Die große Ekstase des Bildschnitzers Steiner’ del mismo autor, que se presenta en esta muestra. Entre ambos momentos se abre un intervalo en la producción artística que permite ampliar la reflexión acerca de lo artesanal desde otras premisas.

Asimismo, la muestra reúne obras cuyas formas y materiales se apartan de lo que solemos entender como artesanía. Tampoco todos los artistas provienen de los territorios que normalmente asociamos con esas tradiciones, lo que contribuye a cuestionar la idea de una autenticidad garantizada. En ese sentido, las piezas reunidas aquí operan como pequeños desplazamientos donde la artesanía deja de aparecer como un espacio de identidad fija que se vincule a lo indígena o no o como una tradición intacta. En su lugar, se abre un terreno donde el hacer, los materiales, los usos y las relaciones entre quienes producen y comparten los objetos recuperan algo de su dimensión humana e impermanente. Desde una reciprocidad de ‘individualidades que se comparten’, los artefactos de la exposición encarnan una forma modesta de resistencia a la estandarización y profesionalización de la producción artística global.

The exhibition takes its title from a text written by Abraham Cruz Villegas in 1997 and is conceived around a temporal gap between that essay and the artist’s new sculpture, "Die große Ekstase des Bildschnitzers Steiner", which is featured in this exhibition. Between these two moments, an interval opens up in artistic production that allows for a broader reflection on craftsmanship from other premises.

Likewise, the exhibition brings together works whose forms and materials depart from what we usually understand as craftsmanship. Nor do all the artists come from the territories we normally associate with these traditions, which helps to challenge the idea of guaranteed authenticity. In this sense, the pieces gathered here function as small shifts in which craftsmanship ceases to appear as a space of fixed identity linked to whether or not it is indigenous, or as an intact tradition. Instead, a space opens up where the act of making, the materials, the uses, and the relationships between those who produce and share the objects regain some of their human and ephemeral dimension. Through a reciprocity of “shared individualities,” the artifacts in the exhibition embody a modest form of resistance to the standardization and professionalization of global artistic production.
